UNION CIVIL WAR NAVAL ASSISTANT SURGEON. ENLISTED IN U.S.NAVY IN 1863 AND SERVED UNTIL RETIREMENT IN 1899. HE WAS APPOINTED CHIEF OF BUREAU OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY
AFTER THE CIVIL WAR,LATER SURGEON GENERAL OF THE NAVY.
HE HAD ATTAINED THE RANK OF REAR ADMIRAL OF THE MEDICAL CORPS
OF THE U.S.NAVY BY THE TIME OF HIS RETIRTEMENT
