A Union soldier, Thomas J. Courter was a member of Company D, 26th New Jersey Infantry. He was enrolled on September 3, 1862 and mustered into federal service on September 18, 1862 at Camp Frelinghuysen in Newark, NJ. He was mustered out on June 27, 1863. .
