SERVED AS COLONEL IN 3RD NEW JERSEY VOL.INFANTRY UNDER GEN.PHIL KEARNEY IN THE FIRST BRIGADE..HE SUCCEEDED GEN.KEARNEY AS COMMANDER OF THE 1ST BRIGADE AND WAS COMMISSIONED BRIG.GEN. ON MAY 9-1862.DURING THE BATTLE OF MANASSAS HE WAS WOUNDED ON AUG.27-1862 AND DIED FROM THE WOUNDS ON SEPT.1-1862 AT ALEXANDRIA,VA.
