Born in Salem County New Jersey in 1832, Lewis Murphy served in the Civil War. He enlisted on October 8, 1861 with Company I, 9th NJ Infantry Regiment and re-enlisted on December 20, 1863 with same unit. Wounded at the battle of Drewreys, Bluff on May 16, 1864. Promoted to Corporal on February 6, 1865. Promoted Sergeant of Company I, 9th NJ Infantry Regiment on April 1, 1865. Mustered out with that unit on July 12, 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
