Private William Halstead Hopping was born November 29, 1838, in Auburn County, New York. On April 29, 1861, at 23 years of age, William enlisted as a private in Company A of the 19th N.Y. Vol. Infantry for 2 years. He was mustered in on May 21, 1861. On December 11, 1862 the 19th became the 3rd N.Y. Light Artillery. William completed his enlistment and mustered out on June 2, 1863. On February 29, 1864 he enlisted as a private in Company E of the 75th N.Y. Vol. Inf. (the Auburn Regiment) for 3 years and mustered in on March 14, 1864. His service this time was cut short as he was discharged for disability on September 15, 1864, at Berryville, Va. He was awarded a pension in 1871. On the 1890 Veteran’s census it was noted that he was suffering with “lung trouble”. He died on January 16, 1894
