UNION CIVIL WAR GENERAL.GRADUATED WEST POIMT AND COMMISSIONED 2ND LIEUT. OF THE 5TH U.S.INF.REGIMENT.AT START OF THE CIVIL WAR WAS PROMOTED TO COLONEL IN THE 3RD U.S.CAVALRY THEN BRIG.GEN.OF VOLUNTEERS AND LATER TO MAJOR GENERAL OF VOLUNTEERS AS DIVIDION COMMANDER.HIS MATERNAL GRANDFATHER WAS RICHARD STOCKTON A SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.
