Private Jacob C. Shinn was born August 23, 1830. He served with the 24th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, Co., G. He was reported as missing in action presumed dead at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. He was the namesake of the G.A.R. post #6 in Port Norris, New Jersey.
