Herman Biggs was a cadet at the US Military Academy class of 1856 graduating 35th out of 49. He received his commission as a 2nd Lt. of the 1st Infantry on July 31, 1856. Biggs was stationed throughout Texas from 1856 to 1859. Biggs returned to West Point as a Assistant Professor of Geography, History, and ethics from August of 1859 to September of 1861. Biggs was promoted to Captain on August 3, 1861 and served as Assistant Quartermaster of the 9th Army Corps. Biggs served General Burnside as Chief Quartermaster during his campaigns in North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. Biggs was promoted to Lt. Colonel on July 23, 1862 and later to Colonel on March 2, 1864. On March 8, 1865 Biggs was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General. Herman resigned his commission on October 9, 1865. He joined the local Grand Army of the Republic Post, D.A. Russell Post 68. By an act of Congress on January 18, 1883, Biggs was reinstated into the army, and was retired as a Captain February 5, 1883. Died on October 11, 1887
